Minorca Biosphere Reserve The island of Minorca was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Biosphere reserves are places on the planet where the concept of sustainable development is applied. They are territories where human activity is developed in a way that is compatible with the conservation of natural resources. The most protected areas on the island are the Nature Reserve of Albufera d’Es Grau, Illa d’en Colom and Cap de Favàritx and surrounding areas. Geography Minorca has an expanse of702 square kilometres and a coastline of 216 kilometres. The maximum distance between two points is 47 km., between Ciutadella and Maó. Geologically the island is divided into two symmetrical but very different halves: the north (Tramontana), with an uneven and rugged coastline, with rough, sparse vegetation and numerous islets and beaches of dark or reddish sand; and the south (Migjorn), flat and made up of calcareous rock, with gentle cliffs and gullies carved by water, and coves of white sand surrounded by pine trees. The highest point of the island is Monte Toro which is of 357 metres. Climate The climate of the island is typically Mediterranean and is noted for its mild temperatures. The average annual temperature is between 16º and 17º, reaching an average of 24º in summer. The absence of natural obstacles has allowed the Tramontana (north wind) to be present in the Minorcan landscape. Indeed, this wind has shaped the island and allows for a clean atmosphere and radiant sun. Rain is scarce during the summer months Population, Municipalities and Communications Minorca has a population of 80,000 inhabitants, concentrated in the 8 municipalities into which it is divided: Maó, the administrative capital, Ciutadella, the former capital, Alaior, Ferreries, Es Mercadal, Es Castell, Sant Lluís and Es Migjorn Gran. Maó and Ciutadella are the two most populated towns on the island. Minorca airport is 5 km. away from Maó and regular maritime routes reach the ports of Maó and Ciutadella. The main interior road links Maó to Ciutadella and there is a large network of rural roads that lead to the coast and to the various prehistoric monuments.
Ciutadella de Menorca Ciutadella, the capital of the island until the British domination and the Episcopal seat. Its historic old quarter, a national historical monument and its secluded harbour make up one of the most beautiful landscapes of the islands. A must to visit is the town hall, the old “Real Alcázar”, the cathedral, built on the site of a mosque, the church and the old convent of “Socors” that houses the Diocesan museum, the baroque church of Roser and the “plaza del Mercado” that date from 1869. La Vall, Son Saura, Cala’n Turqueta and Macarella are heavenly beaches!
